By D. Solomon K. Youhn

Abstract:

This doctorate article critically examines the failure of democracy in Liberia, with a focus on its contributions to dependency and violence. It analyzes the challenges faced by Liberia's democratic system since its inception and identifies key factors that have hindered its progress. The article explores the impact of political instability, corruption, and external influences on Liberia's democratic development, ultimately highlighting the consequences of these failures, including increased dependency and violence within the nation.

Introduction:

Liberia's journey towards democracy, following its establishment as a nation founded by freed African-American slaves, has been marred by persistent challenges. This article critically analyzes the failure of democracy in Liberia, shedding light on the contributions of this failure to the perpetuation of dependency and violence within the country. By examining the factors impeding democratic progress, such as political instability, corruption, and external influences, the article aims to provide insights into the consequences of these failures on Liberia's socio-political landscape.

1. Political Instability and its Impact on Democracy:

Liberia has experienced significant political instability throughout its history, marked by numerous coup d'états, civil conflicts, and periods of authoritarian rule. The frequent disruptions to democratic processes, including contested elections, power struggles, and weak governance, have eroded public trust and confidence in the democratic system. Such instability hampers the effective functioning of democratic institutions and undermines the development of a robust democratic culture.

2. Corruption and its Erosion of Democratic Values:

Corruption has plagued Liberia's democratic journey, impeding progress and deepening socio-economic inequalities. Widespread corruption within the government and public institutions has eroded public trust and confidence in the democratic system. It has perpetuated a culture of impunity, weakened accountability mechanisms, and hindered the equitable distribution of resources. The corrosive effects of corruption have further contributed to the failure of democracy in Liberia.

3. External Influences and the Undermining of Democratic Development:

External influences, including neocolonialism and exploitative foreign interventions, have also played a significant role in impeding Liberia's democratic progress. Interference in the country's internal affairs, support for authoritarian regimes, and economic exploitation have compromised Liberia's sovereignty and hindered its ability to foster a robust and independent democratic system. The influence of external actors has often prioritized their own interests over the development and welfare of Liberia and its people.

4. Consequences: Dependency and Violence:

The failure of democracy in Liberia has had profound consequences for the nation. Political instability, corruption, and external influences have perpetuated a cycle of dependency, where Liberia remains reliant on external aid and unable to achieve sustainable development. Additionally, the erosion of democratic values and institutions has contributed to a climate of violence, including episodes of civil war, social unrest, and political violence.

Conclusion:

The failure of democracy in Liberia, characterized by political instability, corruption, and external influences, has resulted in severe consequences for the nation. The perpetuation of dependency and the prevalence of violence reflect the deep-rooted challenges that hinder democratic development. Addressing these issues requires a comprehensive approach, including strengthening democratic institutions, promoting transparency and accountability, and reducing external interference. Only through these efforts can Liberia overcome its democratic failures and pave the way for a more stable, inclusive, and prosperous future.
